Born to be wild

We followed the standard tourist route and went to the Canadian Rocky Mountains and therefore to the National Parks. The mountains, lakes and views are spectacular but for us the most fascination is the width. Most of it you can also find miniaturized in Switzerland but you do never see forests and mountains for a few hundred kilometers. Our first stop was in Banff, which we liked very much. It has the typical mountain resort spirit with lodges, shops and sport offerings. We followed the tourist’s office recommendation and went on a hike at Johnston Canyon. To be on the safe side I bought a bell that should warn the bears so that we will not get attacked at all. Unfortunately the bell did also scare off all the other animals. Accordingly we did not see much wildlife. The hike itself was very pleasant but reminded both of us of former family hiking holidays. Therefore, seen that – done that.

“Jasper National Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including large healthy populations of grizzly and black bears, mountain caribou, elk, moose and wolves. It also has many smaller creatures, like hoary marmots, pikas and Columbian ground squirrels, and has a large variety of birds, from bald eagles to the endangered harlequin ducks. The best times of year to visit Jasper if you’re looking for wildlife are from March to June or in the fall from September to November.“ (travel.jasper.com)

Well despite that according to the Lonely Planet and other source the wildlife is practically everywhere, we are able to list all our viewings, excluding birds and squirrels:

  • A caribou in the middle of Banff
  • Some dears at the red light in Jasper
  • Two foxes on our way to Malign Lake
  • Well…that’s about it

Somehow we expected more viewings and more charm from Jasper. For us it turned out to be a rip-off village with no wildlife at all. Maybe because there is a highway, a train track, construction work, dog walkers and bikers….

Now it is your turn, in your opinion, where did the animals go?

  • Winter sleep
  • They where there but we just did not see them
  • Disneyland

I'm amazed, I must say. Rarely do I encounter a blog that's both educative and amusing, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. The problem is something which not enough men and women are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy I found this in my search for something relating to this.
