Copacabana & Isla del Sol

A nice bus and ferry ride later we arrived in Copacabana, a little, touristy village at the Lake Titicaca. We stayed, as strangely most of the people we met and read blogs from, in the La Cupola hotel. I still wonder how nearly everybody can stay in the small hotel…

The next morning we took the boat to the Isla del Sol. The island is not far away, but they seem to have only very slow boats. In slow motion it takes two hours to get to the northern end of the island. Our plan was to visit first the northern Inca ruins and hike slowly south. The islander surly learned how to make money. They divided the island in three zones and for every zone you have to pay an entrance fee. The division could be communicated better, now every tourist discusses with the cashiers at every gate as the new claims always take you by surprise.

The hike was beautiful but also very exhausting. Even with only the small backpack, hiking at 3000masl is hard. I got the impression, the locals’ main entertainment after making money with the tourists is laughing at them when they struggle walking and breathing. Best lead for the island: LEAVE your big backpack in Copacabana.

After our hiking adventure the next one followed: Going to a restaurant. There are plenty in the southern part, but as it is an island with steep hills and no streets and motor vehicles, the supply chain is irregular. They may have big menus, but that does not mean that they have the ingredients available. In our case, we got only 50% of our order. It was not clear, if the boy just had a bad short-term memory or if they were out of those things. We did not care that much, as we had enough and the most stunning hotel view ever to go back to.
