Hot Stuff – Sydney and Adelaide

After a short flight Marcel and Ben, Michi’s uncle and cousin, welcomed us at Sydney airport. Lucky us, we could stay with Ben, his wife Michelle and their toddler Oscar. Ben and Michelle did a round the world trip back in 2010 and proved, that a year travelling is not enough to get rid of the travel bug. Apart from enjoying the memories they are already making plans for further travels.

They live in a 20 minutes ferry ride away from Sydney downtown in a nice suburb.  Taking the ferry to the city is quite a nice and relaxing way to commute, especially as you have an excellent view of the harbor bridge and the Opera House each way. We explored Sydney mostly by walking around and taking looks at the most famous sights. It was just too hot for any other activities. The only museum we visited was the Hyde Park barracks museum, which tells the stories of the different people once living there. Did you know that Britain sent 166’000 convicts to Australia, even children! Approximately 50’000 came to the barracks after arrival for registration and work allocation.

A highlight was the fish market, the biggest in the southern hemisphere, with a lot of retailers and restaurants. Together with Marcel we had a great gourmet lunch at the shore. Next to the delicious food it is very funny to see the happy Asians, especially Japanese, eating their raw seafood.

After a few days in Sydney we took a plane to Adelaide, the capital of South Australia and home of my cousins. We could stay with my grandma and her friend at the campground right at the beach. The proximity to the beach is a big plus with temperatures around 38C. We mostly lay in the shadow, took short strolls, went floating in the shallow water and enjoyed chatting with the family.

Adelaide does not have many tourist attractions; instead they have tons of festivals. During our visit was the Fringe, a one-month-long performing arts festival. Part of it was a street arts festival with the funniest acts we have ever seen. The program looked so attractive, that I was considering staying at the beach and watching shows for the rest of our stay. My personal favorites show titles are: “Naked unicorn vomit” and “Pretending things are a cock".
